Orthodontics

We correct the position of your deviated teeth

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is responsible for correcting poorly positioned teeth and bones.

When teeth are crooked or do not fit well together, they are difficult to clean, running the risk of losing them early due to cavities and periodontal diseases. Additionally, they cause additional stress to the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome, and neck, shoulder, and back pain.

They also affect the individual’s appearance and self-esteem.

Conventional Orthodontics

Orthodontics with braces is one of the most traditional and well-known modalities. The main objective of this treatment is to correct malocclusion and improve dental aesthetics and function through the use of brackets attached to the teeth and wires that connect them.

Brackets are small pieces, usually made of metal, although they can also be made of ceramic or sapphire, that are glued to the surface of each tooth with a special cement or resin.

The wires are introduced once the Brackets are placed. This wire, usually made of stainless steel or nickel-titanium, is responsible for exerting the force necessary to move the teeth to the desired position.

Depending on the complexity of the case and the type of movement required, other elements such as springs, hooks and elastics can be used. The use of microscrews is also very common.

Once the treatment is completed, retainers, both fixed and removable, are usually placed to ensure that the pieces do not move again.

We recommend the use of this type of treatment in children and adolescents, since collaboration on the part of the patient is less necessary than in invisible orthodontics.

Dentofacial orthopedic

Orthopedics is responsible for the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of anomalies in the development, shape and position of the bones of the face, as well as dental malocclusions. The goal is to guide and modify facial growth and development.

Unlike orthodontics, which focuses primarily on the movement of teeth, dentofacial orthopedics uses devices that act on the bones of the maxilla and jaw to guide or modify their growth and position. It is usually applied to growing children and preteens and it is very important to go for a consultation early to assess the child’s situation.

If you have had breathing problems, swallow poorly, have allergies or vegetations, snore, keep your mouth open permanently, etc., it is very likely that the bones in your mouth are not developing correctly. With orthopedics we can correct these problems early and very simply. Many times, in these stages, we recommend treatment with a speech therapist to recover the function of the soft tissues (tongue, lips, etc.)

Benefits: In addition to improving facial aesthetics and dental occlusion, dentofacial orthopedics can help improve respiratory function, chewing, and speech in patients with maxillofacial growth problems. Children treated with orthotics at a young age are less likely to need braces treatment. And if they need it in the future, it is usually simpler.
